Elyon

"I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High."

- Isaiah 14:14

God Who? (Part 3)

A name holds great importance as it reveals much about a person. In many eastern cultures still today, as in Bible times, a name was given to reveal the character of its bearer. Even today in our own society, a person's name automatically brings to our mind the character traits that person has acquired through their life and lifestyle. It is no wonder God commands that we must not take His name in vain. His name reveals His character. His name reveals who He is and His desire for His beloved creation.

In all actuality, God is referred to by many names. The modern translations of the Bible omits these names in the translation process, but they can be found in the original manuscripts and early religious writings. All the same, the omission of these names does not minimize the revelation of His character as revealed in the messages of these same passages of Scripture.

As we read Isaiah 14:14, we read a description of early events that took place in heaven prior to the demise of humanity to sin. Here we are given a glimpse of Lucifer's fall from perfection, and the entrance of sin into God's universe. It was Lucifer's intention to become like the Most High, to become like God. It is here in this passage that God is given the name Elyon, God Most High. Lucifer wanted to be the most high, but as Elyon, there is no, and could never be any power greater than that of the Creator God. There is none, and could never be any wiser than or as perfect as He.

When I know God as Elyon, I can then truly understand and claim Philippians 4:13, "I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength." My strength alone is weakness. My works alone are but dung. But Christ, in my weakness, He is strong and my works in His hands yield everlasting fruits.

When I know God as Elyon, I see the truth of John 15:5. Christ states, "I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing." When I know God as Elyon, I have no need to worry; I have no need to fear. Knowing that in my own flesh I am doomed to fail, but with the help, guidance, and direction of Elyon, God Most High, I cannot fail!

HIS NAME IS ELYON. He is God Most High. There is none, and could never be any greater than He. To know God as Elyon is to know the God given power you possess over Satan and sin. It is to know that through His power you can accomplish your God given purpose, can overcome the world, and make Heaven your home.
