"He that dwells in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty."
God Who? (Part 5)
A name holds great importance as it reveals much about a person. In many eastern cultures still today, as in Bible times, a name was given to reveal the character of its bearer. Even today in our own society, a person's name automatically brings to our mind the character traits that person has acquired through their life and lifestyle. It is no wonder God commands that we must not take His name in vain. His name reveals His character. His name reveals who He is and His desire for His beloved creation.
In all actuality, God is referred to by many names. The modern translations of the Bible omits these names in the translation process, but they can be found in the original manuscripts and early religious writings. All the same, the omission of these names does not minimize the revelation of His character as revealed in the messages of these same passages of Scripture.
In Psalm 91:1, God is described as a refuge and a fortress; a God in whom we can trust. He is given the name El Shaddai, which means God Almighty, the source of blessings and comfort. We are assured that under the wings of El Shaddai, we are safe. He will never let us down. He will never forsake us. He is always there to protect us and keep us.
Luke 21:16 warns us that we will experience betrayal in this sinful world. Even those closest to us may turn their back on us. Our family members may not be there when we need them most. Our friends may leave us in our greatest hour of need. But El Shaddai is ever with us. He will never leave us nor will He ever forsake us.
We are warned that trials and tribulations may come our way. The journey of life will not always be easy. However, we are assured that even in the face of adversity, we can lift our hearts in praise to El Shaddai, knowing that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28). We have the assurance that nothing can separate us from the love of El Shaddai. No! Not even death, nor life, no angel, no principality, no power, nothing in the present, nor anything to come. No! There is no height; there is no depth that can separate us from the unfailing love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord!
HIS NAME IS El Shaddai. He is God Almighty, source of comfort and blessings. In your trials, come to Him. In your need, come to Him. He is a refuge, He is the greatest source of comfort, and in Him you can trust!
